When people search for homes, they know that they will be treated fairly in the process; the Fair Housing Act can be attributed with the success of housing equality. The Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968, and it is a law that prohibits the discrimination in home sales, rentals and financing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or disability of a person. Fair housing is the opportunity for all people to have a roof over their head regardless of their status with no outside stereotypes weighing them down.
This law encourages communities to be open and welcoming. Ideas, connections and a sense of pride found in diverse neighborhoods make a real difference in their surrounding communities. Equal access to housing even has a positive correlation with quality of life. Fair housing can help with talent retention, economic development and so much more. When people feel welcomed they in turn pour themselves into their community. Whether it is as simple as maintain outside curb appeal or as dedicated as setting up a daycare or volunteering at a local shelter, etc., which in turn makes their community an appealing place for diverse and talented people to move to.
The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) is recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act on a year-long basis. Shorewest, REALTORS® has, is and will always support Fair Housing. Our REALTORS® are extensively trained on Fair Housing practices, language to use in ads and more. They understand the rights and responsibilities under this law. Shorewest is a part of NAR and that means they have a strict code of ethics in addition to the Fair Housing Act.
Article 10 of the NAR Code of Ethics provides that, “REALTORS® shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. REALTORS® shall not be parties to any plan or agreement to discriminate against a person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. REALTORS®, in their real estate employment practices, shall not discriminate against any person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
The Fair Housing Act has changed the real estate business for the better. No longer can families be discriminated against, and all are given an equal chance for better housing. NAR is also committed to civil rights and making the American Dream available for everyone. Where people live has a direct impact on the quality of their education, access to economic opportunities and health. Equal housing opportunities support the development of racially and economically diverse communities.
