New data from the Census Bureau shows American cities growing more than their suburban counterparts for the first time in 100 years.  Since the mass production of the automobile began, US cities have not seen such a dramatic change in urban/suburban growth figures.  Many experts attribute this growth to the 1 in 6 Americans who belong to the echo-Boom of 18-29 year olds, many of who are choosing to remain urban dwellers.

New Orleans saw the biggest urban rival relative to the suburbs in 2011, 3.7% and .06% respectively.  Atlanta, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Charlotte, North Carolina also saw large gaps between city and suburban growth.

Milwaukee was one of the cities noted for its shift from annual declining population to growth.  Other cities with comparable growth include Pittsburgh and St. Paul, Minnesota.
