Candy Cane Lane began in December of 1984, when neighbors got together to donate money to the MACC (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) Fund in honor of a neighbor’s child being diagnosed with cancer. The neighbors worked together to decorate their homes as festive as possible and encouraged visitors to make a small donation to the MACC Fund. All of the money went to supporting research, treatment, and helped with a cure for some childhood cancers and related blood diseases.
Since 1984, the neighborhood in West Allis has raised more than $1.6 million to support the MACC Fund. More than $85,000 was raised last year! Visitors come from near and far to drive or walk along the winter wonderland. Before Thanksgiving, local students volunteer to wrap the trees like candy canes in the neighborhood.
Candy Cane Lane is located in West Allis, from Montana Avenue on the north to Oklahoma Avenue on the south, and from 96th Street on the west, to 92nd Street on the east. Many different organizations volunteer and help collect money for the MACC Fund and hand out hot chocolate and cookies. Santa Clause himself is even known to make a visit, too!
