100 years ago in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day, though the day was not officially established by an Act of Congress until 1949. The day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States, which was on June 14, 1777.
Did you know that someone from Wisconsin is pegged as the founder of this holiday? In June of 1885 Bernard Cigrand, a grade school teacher in Waubeka, WI held the first recognized formal observance of Flag Day at Stony Hill School. Cigrand has become known as the “Father of Flag Day.” Stony Hill School has been restored as a museum complete with a bust of Cigrand and is a site of annual Flag Day celebrations.
The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” The president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of America’s flag. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early days. Americans are called upon to remember their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice, and observe the nation’s unity.
Most Americans will honor this day by displaying the American flag. There are also flag-raising ceremonies, Flag Day services, musical salutes and parades. Organizations such as The National Flag Day Foundation are actively involved in coordinating activities centered on the event and keeping the flag’s traditions alive. Following Flag Day is Honor America Days, a 21-day period through to July 4 to honor America.
This week make sure to display your flag proudly and participate in community activities meant to honor our nation’s history! #ShorewestRealtors #FlagDay
